Milan Vice President Adriano Galliani First To Approve Serie A's Four Day Week

Milan vice president Adriano Galliani has subscribed to the idea of having Serie A fixtures spread over a four-day week.

Reports around the peninsula on Wednesday claimed the Lega Calcio are planning to revise the Calcio calendar from next season, with designs to stage fixtures on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays. Lega president Maurizio Berretta then confirmed the reports, saying there were some plans to rejig the schedules.

Galliani has now backed the plan. He believes it will bring advantages on every level, starting on the field. The Italian claims the proposals would allow teams in Europe to flex their muscles more given the extra day of rest and preparation they would earn by playing on a Friday.

"It's a project that will certainly be passed," the Milan chief told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"It doesn't have anything that indicates the contrary, everyone will be a winner. The revolution was born out of the idea that we must wake up and be more competitive in Europe.

"It's fundamental to keep Germany away from us in the UEFA ranking if we want to keep four places in the Champions League.

"In Germany and France they play games on the Friday and we have to do the same. On Fridays the teams who have Tuesday fixtures in Europe would play. Those who play on Saturday would be involved in Wednesday fixtures."

AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso has dwelled on the Rossoneri’s brilliant period of form after they followed up a 3-0 defeat of Juventus in Serie A with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Novara in the Coppa Italia yesterday.

“I am very happy with this good patch the team are going through, with our Serie A position and the enthusiasm I can breathe within the camp,” Gattuso told the club’s official website.

“I re-watched Sunday’s match against Juve in Turin. It wasn’t a beautifully-played game, but Milan suffered for just 15 minutes.

“I have noticed that our opponents have had less shots on goal in our past few games and that’s a good thing.

“Our mentality is changing and we have more belief in ourselves when we step on to the pitch.”

Gattuso threatened to leave the club last month after slipping down the pecking order this term following the appointment of Brazilian boss Leonardo.

But he eventually penned a new deal and is now back in the thick of things after recovering from an injury.

“I am pleased with my period of form,” the Italian international said.

“Problems are fading away, I’m training regularly now and I’ve even managed to play two games in four days.”

Andujar: 4 – Had a decent game for the duration of the 90 minutes but will be disappointed not to have done more for Milan’s opener deep into stoppages.

Bellusci: 6.5 – Provided decent cover for long spells but was left exposed following the introduction of Inzaghi late on.

Silvestre: 4.5 - Poor marking for both of the goals as he allowed Inzaghi and Huntelaar combine to deadly effect at the death.

Spolli: 6 – The Argentine was first to everything in the opening period and left Pato with little to work from. He will feel extremely downbeat not to have left the field with a clean sheet.

Capuano: 5.5 – Given a torrid time by Ronaldinho but he did his best not to allow the Brazilian with any clear cut shooting chances inside the box.

Biagianti: 6 – Put in a shift down the middle and was influential in both defence and attack.

Carboni: 6.5 – Kept the Etnei organized for long spells of the game. Caught out by the Rossoneri’s late route one tactics.

Llama: 6 - He needed to be involved in the game more often and couldn't provide enough service to the forward three.

Martinez: 7 - One of Catania's best performers - he was always a danger up top and never tired to chase loose balls despite the lack of passing to feet.

Mascara: 5.5 - Worked hard but couldn’t set the Etnei alight as Ambrosini kept a close eye on him in the middle of the park.

Morimoto: 6 – Gave a generous display up top often getting behind enemy lines. He was rarely afforded the chance to combine with a partner in the box and as a result failed to threaten Dida’s goal.

Substitutes

Izco: 6 – Came on for Llama on the hour mark and couldn’t really impose himself as the sides became increasingly stretched.

Ricchiuti: N/A – Had a decent effort from a late corner, but he couldn’t steer the shot goal bound at the back post.

Potenza: N/A –Brought on in the closing stages to give added cover at the back.


MILAN

Dida: 7 - Another good performance from the Brazilian, he was rarely troubled but always proved ready when called into action.

Abate: 7.5 – Up and down the flank like a locomotive at times. The youngster was one of Milan’s most threatening outlays in the opening period.

Nesta: 7.5 - Efficient performance from the Italian and got the better of Martinez when Catania looked at their most threatening. Still has a great eye for positioning as he played the opposing forwards into offside positions on numerous occasions.

T.Silva: 6.5 – Did his job alongside Nesta and will be glad to have kept a clean sheet following the Rossoneri’s recent difficulties at the back.

Zambrotta: 5 – Did his job at the back, but failed to get forward as much as his coach would have liked and was relieved of his duties shortly after the hour mark.

Flamini: 6 – Worked hard in the middle of the park but he certainly lacks the eye of the man he replaced, Andrea Pirlo.

Ambrosini 6.5 - Good in possession and tried to dictate the play from the middle of the pitch. Gave subsequent cover in front of the defensive line.

Seedorf: 5.5 – Had a number of chances to break the deadlock and should have scored late on following an inviting ball from Ronaldinho.

Pato: 6.5 - He was fairly quiet, but showed flashes of brilliance as he tried to set up his team-mates.

Borriello: 6 – Not one of his most emphatic performances but he worked his socks off providing a target from which his fellow strike partners looked to play off.

Ronaldinho: 8 – He was constantly a threat with his darting runs from outside the box. Unlucky not to score late on with an audacious attempt from a corner that came crashing off the crossbar.

Substitutes

Antonini: 6.5 - Looked lively when he came on and linked up well with Dinho.

Inzaghi: 7 – An immediate threat following his introduction. Turned provider with an instinctive cut back to Huntelaar for the late opener.

Huntelaar: 8.5 – Snatched the man-of-the-match award with a late double that dashed Catania hearts. His second goal was a moment of pure genius and showed his doubters what he has to offer the Rossoneri.
